Double Helix

The tension created by the twisting AND turning of the two helix shapes in parallel gives the double helix its structural strength. At each node the strips make a half twist.

The nodes and the hollow space inside the double helix are suggestive of a bamboo culm, although bamboo uses a different engineering strategy to stay upright.
